ARTIST BIO

Emma Kennedy grew up in the Southside of Chicago. Community is very important to her, and she can often be found photographing local music shows or participating in local art shows. Her work is heavily influenced by Post-War Contemporary art, Russian constructivism, and Dadaism. Emma has shown work throughout the Chicago-land area including most recently, the 44th annual Beverly Arts Center Juried Show.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I fell in love with collage during my early twenties. I began collecting vintage magazines to use them in collages to demonstrate the dangerous and harmful ways ads portrayed women. Using these ads from the past I began to notice that the narratives used in present media haven't changed much. From that moment I fell in love with the idea of tying our past to the present and with the medium of collage. 

Collage gives me ultimate freedom to experiment. I start with a general theme or idea and then allow myself to organically comb through magazines and recycled papers to find what is speaking to me. This method of intuitive creation is somewhat of a healing process for me.
